The Arabic words for freedom and social justice rang out across the Middle East and North Africa this past spring as the region experienced a series of dramatic uprisings against entrenched political orders. Even prior to the popular uprisings, however, NGOs and lawyers in the region had begun to organize and strategize in novel ways, considering how they could positively influence the development of legal systems and governance. Judicial Independence and Legal Empowerment Project (JILEP) Underway in Georgia

PILnet recently completed its contribution to the assessment phase of the USAID-funded Judicial Independence and Legal Empowerment Project (JILEP) in Georgia, which was launched in December 2010 by a consortium of partners led by the East-West Management Institute (EWMI). PILnet is working on a project component of JILEP that aims to improve legal education in Georgia, including stronger support for critical thinking, reflection on ethical values and exposure to opportunities for engaging in social issues. Serbian Law Students Get Trained in Anti-Discrimination Law

To support the development of a legal clinic on anti-discrimination law at Belgrade Law School, PILnet organized a workshop on December 8 to improve understanding of anti-discrimination law and practice as well as enhance students' skills in drafting legal petitions and making legal arguments.
