Business and Human Rights: Arbitration

The course Business and Human Rights: Arbitration provides participants with knowledge about arbitration and other forms of dispute resolution, and how these may affect the public interest. This course provides participants with specific and high-level knowledge on arbitration and other dispute resolution tools.

Speakers

Lise Bosman

Lise Bosman is based at the Peace Palace in The Hague, as Executive Director of the International Council for Commercial Arbitration (ICCA) and Senior Legal Counsel at the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA). She is appointed as Adjunct Professor at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, and has published and spoken widely in the field of international arbitration. Lise is the General Editor of the ICCA International Handbook on Commercial Arbitration (a seven-volume loose-leaf collection of arbitration-related legislation and commentary on over 85 jurisdictions; Kluwer Law International, published since 1984) and the General Editor and contributing author of Arbitration in Africa: a Practitioner’s Guide (Kluwer Law International, Second Edition 2021). Her areas of specialization are: international commercial arbitration law and practice; the practice and development of international arbitration in Africa; international investment law; investor-State arbitration; and State-State arbitration.

Maryana Batalova

Maryana Batalova is an Associate at Dechert Russia and focuses on litigation and arbitration in the Russian Federation. She advises clients on corporate, commercial, real estate and construction, debt recovery and administrative disputes, including multi jurisdictional disputes.

Ms. Batalova has represented Russian and international clients in sectors including the construction, automotive, and oil and gas sectors, and has significant experience in conducting due diligence on leading Russian companies. She has also assisted clients with investigations and corporate compliance matters.

She is included in the 2021 edition of The Legal 500 EMEA for her litigation expertise. The Legal 500 EMEA 2020 additionally recognizes her experience in dispute resolution: arbitration and mediation alongside dispute resolution: litigation. Since 2020 she has also been listed in Best Lawyers for her litigation focus.

Ms. Batalova holds a PhD degree and is an Associate Professor at the National Research University – Higher School of Economics, where she teaches advanced research seminars in international dispute settlement.

Olga Karacheva

Attorney-at-Law at St Petersburg Bar Association, LL.M, Managing Partner at BRight Law Office.

Olga graduated from the Siberian Federal University Law School with distinction. In 2019, she was awarded LL.M. in Human Rights Law with Distinction by Middlesex University London.

Throughout her legal practice, Olga has represented clients in commercial cases and disputes between businesses and the state at internationally set standards. She is also practiced in human rights law, representing her clients both nationally and internationally.

In human rights law, Olga largely focuses on the right to equality and non-discrimination, as well as business & human rights. She works on gender-based violence cases, including cases of sexual abuse and domestic violence against women and children both at the domestic and international levels.

Olga is also a trainer under the European Programme for Human Rights Education for Legal Professionals (HELP) as well as a trainer at the St Petersburg Institute for Legal Research, Advocacy and Mediation.

James Brady

James Brady is a partner at the Cleary Gottlieb London office. His practice focuses on dispute resolution, investigations, and enforcement.

He has been named as a commercial litigation and arbitration “Rising Star” by Legal Week and recognized by Chambers UK and The Legal 500 for his experience in banking litigation and international arbitration.

James has substantial experience representing some of the world’s leading organisations on a wide range of commercial disputes, banking disputes, and investigations by regulatory and law enforcement authorities. His work frequently involves complex multijurisdictional matters and high-stakes disputes, and he has represented clients in English court proceedings, arbitrations, and before authorities including the UK Financial Conduct Authority, the Prudential Regulation Authority, and the Serious Fraud Office.

James became a partner in 2019.
