Giving legal support to NGOs and developing country delegations in international climate change negotiations.

Clyde & Co works with Legal Response International (LRI) to offer support and free legal advice to developing and climate-vulnerable stakeholders during international climate negotiations. At the informal inter-sessional meetings of the United Nations Subsidiary Bodies in May – June 2021, ahead of the November 2021 UN Climate Change Conference (COP26), Clyde & Co provided an accredited observer who attended the virtual meetings on behalf of LRI, and provided a team of volunteers who researched and responded to questions from delegates and negotiators. Through this pro bono work, volunteers were able to support some of the delegates’ contributions to the Subsidiary Bodies’ non-binding technical recommendations, which will inform the political discussions at COP26 in November. Clyde & Co has agreed to fund training for a junior negotiator and lawyer from a developing country who will attend COP26 and will continue to support LRI during the summit.

“Clyde & Co’s support has been a real help as we navigated our first-ever virtual UN climate conference. Their research, flexibility, and availability have enabled us and our delegates to stay on top of key developments in negotiations.” Pascale Bird, Advice Coordinator for LRI.
