Offering commercial legal advice to not-for-profit organisations and social enterprises.

Providing legal advice, information and advocacy to those fighting climate change.

MinterEllison (ME) has a unique dedicated Social Enterprise (SE) and Social Impact team, providing charity and SE governance advice as a key practice area. Through this practice, ME assists numerous environmental organisations in establishing profit for purpose and not-for-profit (NFP) entities and hybrid structures, drafting tailored governance documents and policies and advising on day-to-day funding agreements. These include: Protect our Winters and For Wild Places (mobilising the winter sports and outdoor communities to protect the environment); Women’s Environmental Leadership Aust (promoting women’s leadership in climate action); Plant for the Planet (reafforestation movement) and Indigo Power (community based and controlled renewable energy). During Covid19, ME supported Moving Feast – a collection of SEs in the food/logistics system collaborating to meet the needs of disadvantaged communities during the pandemic. Working with charity STREAT, ME developed the collective contractual and governance framework. Keith Rovers, MinterEllison Partner said: ‘There are many NFPs and SEs doing great work tackling climate related and sustainability issues, from direct action supporting reafforestation, carbon farming, new bio-products, circular economy models, as well as those supporting employment transitions and addressing social aspects of climate related transition risk – we see great opportunity to use our commercial and legal skills to help these organisations make positive environmental and social impact and achieve sustainability’.
