Earlier this month, our team was part of the first Hong Kong Pro Bono Roundtable of 2023, hosted by DLA Piper. The event created an opportunity for the Hong Kong legal community to come together, learn about the public interest and pro bono work that barristers are doing, and explore how law firms and other lawyers can provide support.

The conversation began with sharing from three Hong Kong barristers about how previous experience contributed to their interest in this field and how they now source for public interest opportunities. The role of legal aid was also discussed, including how it can be supplemented by pro bono and the key role played by NGOs. Following this, DLA Piper solicitors shared their experiences working with and supporting barristers. The Roundtable ended with some brief sharing about The Chancery Lane Project, and how Hong Kong legal teams can get involved.

“Bringing together and learning from the diverse voices that make up Hong Kong’s legal community — including barristers, law firms, in-house counsel, NGO lawyers, academia, and law students — offers a unique chance to improve the effectiveness and reach of our pro bono efforts. We look forward to many more discussions!”
