Lidya Tewelde

Lidya Tewelde is a Legal Fellow with PILnet based in Addis Ababa. She is involved in PILnet’s Refugee Rights Pro Bono work, including PILnet’s Clearinghouse and undertaking research around the legal needs of refugee-led organizations (RLOs). Lidya’s passion for refugee rights protection stems from her lived experience as an Eritrean refugee. Hence, researching and solving refugee-related issues is an academic and personal endeavor. Previously, she worked as an Assistant Execution Officer and Judicial Assistant in Eritrea where she was involved in legal research, advising, and court management. As a refugee, Lidya has taken significant strides towards supporting her refugee experience with valuable interdisciplinary knowledge of Refugee and Forced Migration issues by taking courses and research training. She has also worked with LERRN at Carleton University and the Refugee Studies Centre at the University of Oxford as a consultant on a project evaluating RLOs in Africa and the Middle East. Lidya holds an LL.B degree from Adi-Keih College of Arts and Social Sciences, Eritrea (2018) and will begin an MSc in Refugee and Forced Migration Studies at the University of Oxford in October 2023.
