In 2024, PILnet enlisted the help of students at the NYU School of Law under the supervision of Professor Lamin Khadar to conduct research into the question, including interviews with lawyers engaged in pro bono at international law firms. Their report, Conflicts of Interest: Barriers and Solutions to Environmental Pro Bono Placements at International Law Firms later formed the basis of a candid Chatham House discussion PILnet convened in London in April 2024 with representatives of law firms, clearinghouses and environmental NGOs.

This toolkit is based on the findings of the NYU research and the outcome of the London convening. It is structured as a set of “Do’s” and “Don’ts” to guide all stakeholders—NGOs, clearinghouses, and law firm—in pitching, matching, and supporting environmental pro bono projects.
