PILnet’s regional hub in Budapest, which also serves as a legal seat for PILnet Foundation, a Hungarian entity, anchors its work across Europe. European legal developments significantly shape civil society, both within the region and globally, with many measures narrowing civic space and producing extraterritorial effects that restrict the operations of civil society organizations worldwide. Within this context, PILnet addresses interconnected challenges through an intersectional approach, working across the nexus of climate justice, refugee protection, and civic space, while also advancing other thematic areas such as children’s rights and minority rights. The commitment to strengthening access to justice and civic participation is further reflected in the organization’s active role in European Pro Bono Week, an annual initiative uniting lawyers, NGOs, and stakeholders to promote and expand pro bono culture, and in PILnet hosting of the European Pro Bono Alliance, a collaborative network that supports cross-border cooperation and capacity-building.
