PILnet secured pro bono legal assistance for Association Concerning Sexual Violence Against Women (ACSVAW), a Hong Kong-based NGO that has been raising awareness about sexual violence and providing support to survivors since 1997. PILnet facilitated a partnership between law firms Lewis Silkin and Karas So LLP to help ACSVAW review existing laws, policies, and prosecution practices in relation to persistent child sexual abuse in Hong Kong and other jurisdictions with similar legal systems. The result was a comprehensive and detailed report, which ACSVAW continuously refers to when crafting their position papers and advocacy strategy in the child sexual abuse law reform process.
Partnerships like this are worth celebrating, especially when the collaboration deepens beyond the research itself: several lawyers who worked on the project went on to attend ACSVAW’s public symposium on sexual abuse law reform in Hong Kong.
